Earlier this week I filmed a commercial for the Broward Health Project. It was a lot of fun and, not to mention, provided some much-needed extra change in the pocket. I went on set expecting a low-budget local commercial and was surprised to find a catering service, a crew 30 ppl strong and even some strange contraption that suspended over a car on set to make it appear as though it were moving under streetlights. I was cast the young daughter of a mother with a terminal illness, discussing our process of finding the right hospital. Sounds riveting, huh? Coming soon to a beach channel near you...
After wrapping the commercial shoot, I headed to the mall (even though I was exhausted, I had been up since 3:50 a.m. in preparation for a 5:00 a.m. cast call). I didn't get home until 11:00 p.m. (thanks to those fabulous holiday store hours) and had succeeded in taking care of almost everyone on my shopping list. I knew that I needed to get it done during the week because we had a full-steam-ahead sorts of a fin de semana.
On Friday night, we were delighted to head to the Colony Theater to support our friend, Omar, in the Miami Gay Men's Chorus version of, Nutcracker: Men in Tights. We went there expecting him to maybe appear in a scene here or a song there, but were amazed to discover that he was the MAIN CHARACTER. He was a riot and the cast was amazing.
Afterward, me, Ben, Maggie and Gabe snapped shot with the star of the show and then hopped on our scooters to Cavas, the wine bar I took my mom and sister to. We finished the night at Mondrian, a gorgeous new bar on the bay. I must say, though, if I have ever seen a clear sign of the state of our economy it was Friday night. Miami was a ghost town. I have never seen it as dead as it is this year. It was almost creepy to see Miami like that.
Saturday night we had an exciting event to go to; I was Stephanie's +1 to a fabulous party for the South Beach Symphony and, luckily for us, our friend Lindsay also had a +1, so Ben got to join. It was one of those rare occasions where you can get really dressed up - the theme was "Old Hollywood Red Carpet," so you can imagine. We didn't get all themed-up this time around, but we did go and have a fabulous time, although we were a little late...
Why, you might ask? A couple of reasons, actually - namely the fact that our fabulous friend, Stephanie, gave a us a little scare earlier that day and my scooter key got stuck in the fuel cap. Ugh.
Early Sat morn, I was preparing to be Stephanie's lucky +1 and decided to give her a call around 1 p.m. to get an idea of what time we were meeting, etc. She didn't answer the phone so I just left a message telling her to call me when she got up (it's not abnormal for Steph to sleep this late). Well...3 hours later, I still hadn't heard anything so I sent her a text, "Call me when you can". Two hours later? Still nothing. I had a hair appointment at 5:30, so I call Ben asking him if he has heard anything from her. Everyone else I had talked to said that we were meeting around 9 and I knew we didn't have much time. I'm a slave to worry so, of course, I insisted that we go over and check on her. Ben went over to her apt while I was at my hair appointment and was escorted to her door by the valet lady. Of course, true to Stephanie Green style, she was ASLEEP and had been snoozing her alarm for hours.
Needless to say, she got a late start and then, after my hair appointment, I go put gas in the scooter and put the key in the fuel cap to remove it. The cap comes off fine but when I try to turn the key (to attach the cap back to the scooter) it wouldn't move. I fiddled with it for a couple of minutes and then called Ben asking him if this had ever happened to him while driving it. He said no and I told him I would call him back. I asked two people to come by and try it for me and both of them said that there was no way that the key was moving. I called Ben again and asked him to come get me (I couldn't drive the scooter without the fuel cap attached). He sounded less than thrilled and, 15 minutes later, drove up and got out of the car to take a look. I am sure that he thought I was making a mouse out of a molehill, but I think he quickly realized that it was no joke - this thing wasn't going to move. Long story short, we had to buy some stuff to fix it, but it set us back about two hours.
Regardless of the setbacks, we made it and had a fabulous time. Thanks to Steph and Lindsay for hooking us up!
We embark on our FL -----> KY journey in t-minus 1 day. All this and I'm learning how to drive a stick-shift on the way? That's right - if you're on the road, look out - this could get ugly.
We will see many of you at the engagement party (I'm so excited!) and the rest of you, we will miss. To each of you: have a Merry Christmas and/or Happy Chanukah! Thanks to all of you for your love, support and friendship - that is the GREATEST gift of all.
Many updates to come on the KY adventure... (P.S: Ben's parents are going to witness their first-ever Wills/Caudill Christmas...this could get good!)
Oh my God, I just read this. So fucking funny. Sadly, not the first time. Hopefully the last. And PS I didn't even know about the scooter thing! What a crazy night, as usual Miss Yip:)
